This past Saturday I had the pleasure of attending and participating in Sustainable Montgomery’s inaugural Greenfest. The Greenfest was held on the Walden-Wallkill Rail Trail. It featured over twenty vendors providing education and information on topics such as green home improvements, solar energy services, sustainable farming and homemade foods from local sources.

The Greenfest culminated with the awarding of the prizes for the student contest to build or describe an invention using green technology. The winner Eric Button demonstrated and presented his invention of a brace that generated an electrical charge through the motion of a knee-joint. Michael Dervensky, Nathaniel Storaska and Aaron Goldstein were awarded second place for discussing in great detail alternative methods for increasing efficiency of solar facilities.

On behalf of sustainable Montgomery I would like to thank the many people who helped make this a great day including; Shawn Dell Joyce and all the folks at the Wallkill River School who adopted the Sustainable Montgomery group and made this event a possibility; our wonderful friends at Shanti Mandir who provided fantastic Indian food, amazing music and a wonderful craft display; the vendors who took a day of their time to educate us on the wonderful alternatives available that promote sustainable living, the incredibly innovative intelligent participants in our student green technology invention contest and to all who attended to make this such a great event. We hope to make this the first of many events.
