Five Reasons to see an Estate Planning Attorney after your Divorce:  Completely Untie the Knot

Five Reasons to see an Estate Planning Attorney after Your Divorce:  Completely Untie the Knot

Now that your divorce is settled, it is important to think about estate planning for the benefit of your children or others closest to you.

Here is what is critical to consider:

  1. You don’t want the wrong people like former family members and in-laws inheriting assets if you pass on.
  2. You need to appoint a legal guardian for your children in case something should happen to both you and your ex.
  3. Your estate planning documents should reflect your accurate legal name if that has changed through marriage and divorce.
  4. You need to designate new agents on your Power of Attorney and Health Care Proxy to make decisions for you in the event that you become sick, homebound, or disabled.
  5. You should make plans to secure your assets in the event of a future marriage or long-term disability.

It’s never the wrong time to meet with an estate planning attorney and discuss what you can do now to protect your assets and your family.
