Domestic violence is always a concern, but with people isolated together during the Covid-19 crisis, facing financial difficulties and work-related stresses, there has been a marked uptick in reports of domestic violence. New York State Police have reported a 15% increase of domestic violence calls from this time last year.

To address this, the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence has introduced two new initiatives.

The State now has a number – (844) 997-2121 – that victims of domestic violence can text to seek help, as well as a new chat function through their website – opdv.ny.gov – where victims can speak with a professional online.

Victims can continue to call the hotline at (800) 942-6906. All of these services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

In Orange County, Fearless of the Hudson Valley, formerly Safe Homes, have advocates available 24 hours a day at their hotline number – (845) 562-5340, and can provide shelter, guidance and resources to combat domestic violence and abuse. More information is available at fearlesshv.org.

The Courts remain open to hear initial applications for Orders of Protection. J&G is here to help if you have been the victim of domestic violence. Our attorneys have many years of experience advocating for our clients in need. If you or a loved one has experienced domestic violence or abuse, whether physical, verbal or financial, call the law offices of J&G today at (845) 778-2121, or visit our website at Jacobowitz.com for more information.
