ATTENTION  PET LOVERS

Attention Pet Lovers:  A recent amendment to the New York Domestic Relations Law requires that in a divorce proceeding, the best interests of a pet be considered when awarding possession of the pet to one of the divorcing parties.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 36.5% of American households owned a dog and 30.4% owned a cat in 2012. Custody of pets is often an issue in divorce proceedings, just like custody of children. Until now, courts have dealt with pets as they do with personal property such as cars and furniture. However, for many families, pets are members of the family. Now, pets must be given more consideration by courts to ensure that they will be properly cared for after a divorce.

If you are considering a divorce, we have helpful information on our Website or you can call us to schedule a consultation at 845-764-9656.
